A 3.5-hour drive takes you to the Tibetan area, where you visit a nearby herdsman's home, cook dinner together, and light the Tibetan stove. On the second day, hike to the foot of the snow mountain pasture, a round trip of about 3 kilometers with an elevation gain of 300 meters, with tea and snacks along the way. Suitable for those who want to deeply experience the daily life of Tibetan pastoral areas.

About this journey

"Everyone knows Shangri-La, yet few seem to truly enter it. The car takes you to a completely new town. Apart from scenic spots and temples, you are there, but you have never arrived in Shangri-La."

The soul of the Tibetan area lies in the grasslands, and the beauty of the grasslands is not just passing through. The morning mist and the first rays of sunlight, seeing horses freely roaming or galloping, cattle and sheep strolling—that will be a wonderful trip.

This 2-day, 1-night itinerary: starts with two people (you can find a companion, or contact customer service to join a group with others at the same time). After arriving at the Tibetan herdsman's home stay, we set aside time for an evening walk in the pastoral area before cooking dinner. What's different is that we see more cattle, sheep, yaks, and horses returning home from grazing, as well as the evening glow of the pasture. The next morning, breakfast is Tibetan-style prepared by Zhuoma. Don't worry if you're not used to it; she will also prepare other food. After breakfast, we head to the foot of the snow mountain (snow in winter) and hike to the summer pasture (herders live there in summer; in winter, it's cold and they leave). We enter the primitive forest, take a light hike of about 2 kilometers, then prepare a trailside meal before concluding. At 15:30, we return to Dali, or you can stay in Shangri-La.

By the pasture river, an aunt carries a basket and shovels cow dung, collecting fuel for winter. The frost under the sun is crystal clear. Our activities follow the yaks, transitioning from summer pasture camping to winter Tibetan stove fires, the Tibetan pastoral life.

In the morning, Zhaxi's windows are covered with mist. Sister gets up early and lights the Tibetan stove. The house fills with warm air. Outside, it's minus 10 degrees Celsius. The yaks on the pasture have already gone out to find grass on their own. Next door, only a few calves remain, playing in the pen awaiting the day's sun. Sister prepares butter tea and tsampa, and, fearing we might not be used to it, also prepares eggs and steamed rolls. With a smile and in broken Chinese, she says, "Eat quickly to warm up." She herself wraps her head in a scarf and covers her face: "I'll go chop some firewood."

It's more forest education than forest bathing; they learn about the local flora and fauna, especially mushrooms, for which the region is famous. 🍄 She also organizes trips to small Muslim-Chinese villages around Dali, where a very interesting minority lives - the Hui people who worship Allah. ☪️ She picked us up in her jeep at the place we requested. During the trip, she gave her all, showing us hard-to-reach areas. ⛰️ The previous photos showed the view from her home, and now other lovely people we met who gave their whole hearts. ❤️ The girl we traveled to Tibet with - Aruna. She comes from Inner Mongolia, lives and works in Dali (one of the most beautiful cities in Yunnan), organizing forest trips for tourists from other regions of China, mostly families with children. In the photo with her partner. I have not encountered anything like this on such a scale in any other part of the world. My companion has a similar experience, with...

Taking advantage of the holiday, I signed up for OTC Town's two-day Shangri-La pastoral hiking activity @Dali Cangshan Hiking Home. For the first time seeing snow-capped mountains and pastures up close, I still can't forget that feeling full of freedom and sacredness. Maybe humans always get excited about unpredictable extreme weather! Waking up in the herder's house and seeing the rain that had been falling all day, I inexplicably worried about the activity experience. But when the car drove to the foot of Tongbao Snow Mountain and I saw the slowly falling snowflakes, I suddenly realized that this might be even more worth visiting than a sunny snowy mountain. The mysterious snow mountain hidden behind the snow curtain, the yak herds shuttling through the jungle, the purple azaleas shining in the snow—all summoned the deep desire for freedom within me. I finally became a child of nature again! We kept hiking until we reached a small wooden cabin in the snow. Everyone sat around the fireplace. Who knows how powerful the stewed yak meat with a huge amount of instant noodles was at that moment? We, from different places and countries, chatted about common topics, watching the gradually slowing snow scene outside the window. Thus, we stored precious moments of life in Shangri-La. I recommend this activity again. The two guides, Aruna and Xiaoqi, were reliable and humorous. We stayed at the summer pasture, ate Tibetan food, drank highland barley wine, acted as wild plant hunters, and the hiking route had no tourist crowds. The two-day experience was better than the entire holiday. One day, we will meet again, Shangri-La.

Arura found such beautiful scenery. It was effortless even with a child, and we could enjoy the pasture and snow-capped mountains. I loved it so much!
