Route introduction:
After running the shop in Xizhou for half a year, I found that during every peak tourist season, the wheat fields and the big green tree in Xizhou are always crowded with people, everyone queuing for the perfect photo spot. Most visitors with cycling needs also just go to the ecological corridor to ride and see the scenery. But in fact, Xizhou's charm goes far beyond those popular attractions; its true appeal often lies in the unnoticed corners and everyday details.
Xizhou Farmland
Several times I cycled with friends to nearby villages. Along the way, the wheat fields were vast, without paths trampled by tourists – they were likely the local farmers' grain fields. Seeing those fields reminds me that Xizhou's farmlands are not just scenery; they are the source of livelihood for locals. There's a place called Jiasèji in Xizhou that details the farming culture, the local farmers' working methods, use of tools, and the history of crop cultivation.
The fields along the road also grow different crops according to the seasons. Spring brings green wheat fields, summer golden rice, and autumn often sees crops like lettuce. Large trucks often wait by the roadside to load, while local women (niángniáng) sit on small stools, chatting and bundling lettuce into bunches for the collectors. These trucks then transport the lettuce to supermarkets, hotpot restaurants, etc. This might be a modern continuation of farming culture.
This seasonal change gives Xizhou's scenery a dynamic beauty.
Big Green Tree
The big green tree, as an iconic sight in Xizhou, looks small and cute from a distance, like a "broccoli," but up close, its enormity and age become apparent. This visual contrast evokes wonder at nature and the passage of time. In fact, there are many big green trees in Xizhou. Before the TV drama "Meet Yourself" became popular, these trees likely served as places for villagers to gather and rest, to chat and share stories.
Bai Villages and Residences
Passing through the wheat fields, we come across Bai villages. Many houses here have been modernized; they still look Bai style from the outside but are more modern inside. This fusion might be a balance in Xizhou's tourism development – preserving tradition while adapting to modern visitors' needs. Walking deeper into the village, we encounter more traditional Bai houses, with exquisite hand-painted murals and carvings on the walls, reflecting the residents' attention to life. Sometimes there are vegetable stalls run by villagers, likely frequented by neighbors.
While cycling, we often meet Bai villagers out for a walk. They wear traditional Bai clothing and smile kindly, greeting us – their warmth and simplicity are palpable. The women often wear sunglasses, which is said to be part of Bai culture. Sometimes I can't help wondering about their lives. In the evening, we encounter horse drivers and their horses returning from work. During the day, tourists ride the horses; at dusk, the horses carry their owners home, as if they are a family living together.
Erhai Lake Scenery
Upon reaching the lakeside, the view opens up quickly. Immediately you see Erhai Lake, trees in the water, people under the trees, and mountains on the opposite shore. The scenery by the lake is endlessly captivating. This is not just a tourist spot but also part of daily life for local villagers. Nearby villagers bring their children here to cycle and play. The colorful boats parked by the shore are tools for fishermen, and of course, tourists in colorful attire come here to enjoy the beauty. Fishermen, villagers, and tourists all share nature's gift.
