Along the way, the guide introduced various plants and fungi. When we got tired, we rested on the spot, with some fruit, tea, and snacks. Sitting in the forest enjoying a moment of tranquility, especially with the very well-behaved Frizzy by my side, it was truly healing! Going down the mountain to Auntie's house for an authentic wood-fired mushroom meal, including the mushrooms we picked ourselves. I was initially worried that the kids wouldn't like mushrooms, but they ate them with great relish! Truly wonderful!

During Dali's long rainy season, our family of four stepped into the misty Cangshan Mountains for a gentle and healing wild mushroom foraging trip. Following our guide Zhen Hao, we strolled slowly through the forest, with two little dogs, Miaomiao and Maomao, closely accompanying us all the way. Like attentive little bodyguards by our side and cheerful navigators leading the way, they added a lively touch to the tranquil mountain woods. A fine drizzle pattered on the leaves, and the moist soil carried a fresh, grassy scent that wafted over us. The mountain forest was dotted with wild mushrooms of all shapes. Teacher Zhen Hao carefully guided us to identify each one, distinguishing the beautiful but poisonous ones. The novel wild creatures kept the two little girls wide-eyed and marveling throughout the journey. Along the way, the teacher gave detailed explanations about fungi, and we clearly understood the difference between porcini (Boletus) and button mushrooms: porcini have soft, sponge-like pores under the cap, while button mushrooms have neat, strip-like gills. It was easy to understand, and the children remembered it well. The teacher also patiently explained the wild plants and herbs along the path, unlocking many natural secrets for us. The undulating mountains, the flowing clouds, the misty green vegetation, the occasional drizzling rain—this is a beauty I never tire of, even after seeing it for so many days. The mountains are like an ocean born from the passage of time, and the immense silence is like waves crashing upon you, leaving you speechless. Allow everything to be as it is, and stop searching for any meaning. I return here at various points in my life, trying to use the beauty of nature to repair my worn-out spirit and my eyes, which have been damaged by electronic media. This is a therapy of non-action that man-made landscapes in the city cannot replace. Just as it is written in a book: "I like all living and non-living things to maintain their original appearance as much as possible. I love the roughness and disorder of nature, so I can never truly appreciate a garden that is neatly arranged, with paths like a chessboard and evergreen trees trimmed into geometric shapes." Xiao Jing also prepared tea breaks, and during the chat, I met a sister in the group who works on gibbon conservation in Yunnan (amazing). For lunch, we had a farmhouse mushroom meal in the village, very satisfying! Transportation In the morning, I took a taxi from the ancient town to the meeting point. On the way back, because the location was remote and it was summer vacation, I couldn't get a taxi. The sister from the group gave us a ride back to the ancient town. Dressing Tips Wear long sleeves and long pants if possible. It might rain sometimes, so bringing a windbreaker is more convenient. Mushroom Sustainability 1. Don't pick mushrooms that haven't opened their caps; pick large ones, not small ones. 2. Don't use rakes to damage the mycelium. 3. Only collect samples of poisonous mushrooms. 4. Picked mushroom samples can be placed back in a suitable growing environment and covered with pine needles. Because the spores still exist under the cap, placing them in a suitable spot or back where they were picked may allow them to continue spreading spores. 5. Take photos instead of picking.

I used to think picking a full basket was the only way not to waste, but after listening to the guides, I felt reluctant—realizing that the moment a mushroom cap opens is both the start of spores traveling on the wind and the countdown to the end of life. In that instant, I understood that these silent fungi are no different from us: all completing life's cycle in limited time. Plants stretch their leaves, animals scurry for food, humans chase meaning, and mushrooms nourish the forest in their own way, decomposing decay and maintaining balance. On the mountain, we also came across a few local graves. The guide said that here, tomb-sweeping is never a somber ritual; people bring wine, food, and cards, sitting around the resting place of their loved ones, chatting and laughing, like a feast that transcends life and death. That acceptance of death made the mountain breeze feel gentle. When we descended, our basket held a few carefully selected mushrooms, but I felt more fulfilled than if it were full. The best encounters are never greedy possession, but prudent choice—knowing which to leave on the mountain to continue life, which to take home to share, and understanding the perseverance of each mushroom and the dignity of every life. How could you miss mushroom picking when in Dali? I have to say the ecological environment here is superb, it's a paradise for mushrooms, full of nature's surprises. I must also praise our guides Xiaomi and Zhenhao, who not only helped us identify various mushrooms but also shared many mushroom-picking tips, like where mushrooms are likely to grow and how to tell if they're edible. They explained everything clearly. When we found beautiful mushrooms, they even took photos for us, providing great emotional value. This trip not only filled our basket with mushrooms but also brought us lots of joy and knowledge. After spending so long in the city, it's truly rare to have such an opportunity to get close to nature. A small tip: if you're joining the mushroom-picking activity, remember to wear comfortable, non-slip shoes, preferably waterproof; bring a light jacket as the temperature difference between morning and evening in the mountains is significant; and keep your backpack minimal for a better experience.

Five stars is not enough! This is absolutely the most unforgettable experience in Dali, bar none! In the early morning, the Cangshan Mountains were shrouded in mist and clouds, the air crisp enough to make you feel drunk on oxygen! Following an experienced local guide, we stepped into the embrace of the forest. Underfoot was a soft, thick carpet of pine needles; in our ears were birdsong and the sound of mountain streams; our noses were filled with the incredibly healing "forest fragrance"—a mix of pine, earth, and decaying leaves. Here's the highlight! Mushroom picking! The guides Xiao Mi and Zhen Hao were like walking "mushroom encyclopedias," patiently teaching us how to identify which ones were edible "mountain treasures" (such as jian shou qing, boletus, termite mushrooms... just the names make your mouth water!). Every time we discovered a little cutie hidden under fallen leaves, beside tree roots, or even in rotting wood, the thrill was like opening a blind box from nature! The sense of achievement was overwhelming!

Finally took the kids to pick mushrooms in Cangshan! 🍄‍🟫 Teacher Wanwan's professional explanations gave us a more intuitive feel for the beauty of nature. At the start, Teacher Wanwan made plant bracelets for the kids and showed them plant Lego, which amazed the siblings, and they even tried making their own. As the trail into the mountain got wilder, my cautious younger son often said he didn't dare to go, but Teacher Wanwan patiently encouraged him. Sometimes we came across scattered pinecone remnants, a sign that the squirrel family had eaten their fill and hidden away. The kids looked around, trying to spot the squirrels 🐿️ Before we knew it, a few hours had passed, and it wasn't as tiring as I had imagined. The kids felt a great sense of accomplishment 👏🥳

I must say I'm really lucky. On my last day in Dali, it was the very first day of this year's mushroom-picking activity (mushroom season is from June to November). I picked a lot of mushrooms with my own hands, and truly got the joy of foraging. Back at the farmhouse, we also got to eat dishes made from the freshly picked mushrooms (including quite a few that bruise blue when touched). I have to say that meal was the most delicious mushroom feast I've ever had. The mushrooms practically danced on my tongue. We picked a total of 12 different kinds of mushrooms, and the young lady said that in July and August you can pick more than 20 kinds. I hope to come back next time. The guides really love mushrooms and are a lot of fun.

Our exclusive group of six adults and six kids had two female guides and a cute little dog. The guides took care of the children throughout, took photos and videos, and helped us find many mushrooms. In the end, we classified and found 12 types of mushrooms, including three large porcini mushrooms. It was a very natural experience, no staged photos, no forced activities. So thoughtful! The hiking route was very suitable; kids aged 3-7 all managed well. Every child got something, and we were super lucky to find three huge black porcini mushrooms! We also saw some plain-looking but poisonous amanita mushrooms—what a stroke of luck. Because we were late, lunch was also delayed, but the ladies at the restaurant waited for us and prepared a lot of delicious food. We entered the mountain at 8 in the morning, and it happened to be raining. Mushroom picking is really fun for a northerner. I did it last year and couldn't stop thinking about it. This time, I flew to Dali just for mushroom picking again! The mushroom spot is at the foot of Cangshan, very close to Dali Old Town. We gathered at 8 am and started heading into the mountains. Along the way, the guide explained various wild plants on Cangshan, like mugwort, lemongrass, and goat milk fruit—super interesting. When we reached the spot, we started looking for mushrooms. The feeling of searching for 'treasure' was so novel and fun. Mushrooms were hidden under pine needles and fallen leaves. The 'pop' sound when picking mushrooms was also very satisfying. After picking, we had a session to learn about the mushrooms and take photos with our haul. The guide explained which were poisonous and which were edible. The guide carried tea, fruit, and snacks, so we listened while eating and drinking—very relaxing. The edible mushrooms were taken down the mountain, while the poisonous ones were destroyed. After descending, we went to a local auntie's house for a mushroom meal (pictures 15-16). After a busy morning, the meal was incredibly delicious! The activity ended around 1 pm. It was really fun! The price of this company is not cheap—over 300 per person—but it was truly enjoyable. I've chosen them for two consecutive years. This time, we traveled off-peak, so our group was the only one picking mushrooms. There was also a cute little dog named Zhamao. It was a very happy experience!

People go into the mountains early in the morning and can harvest a basketful of fresh mushrooms in half a day. Under the guidance of two excellent guides and two lively little dogs, we had a very rewarding mushroom picking experience. We saw various colorful mushrooms, including jian shou qing, niu gan jun, and ji zong jun, as well as many others we couldn't name. We brought our morning harvest back to a farmhouse, where the locals enthusiastically introduced the mushrooms to the children. Lunch included a fragrant mushroom chicken soup and stir-fried mushrooms. It's definitely worth experiencing.

Mushroom picking was so much fun! My daughter said she could pick mushrooms all day. Xiao Jing was exceptionally kind—when we couldn't get a taxi, she picked us up and even took a detour to drop us off. She also carried tea, snacks, and fruit up the mountain. She's a fairy! Originally a last-minute decision, but it turned out to be the most beautiful surprise of my Yunnan trip. Wuwei Temple, a light hike on the back mountain, overlooking Erhai Lake from the summit. With my child, we identified termite mushrooms, bruising boletes, and king boletes. Got addicted to digging bruising boletes, haha. I first saw this shop when I wanted to go to Dali and saved it, but didn't make it. The next year, when I decided to go to Yunnan, an old friend recommended it to me, and I saw it was exactly the one I had saved. I stayed in Dali for four nights, two of which in the old town. One night, I went on a hike along the Ancient Tea Horse Road with Jason, Yanzi, Dangdangdang, and my child's favorite Zhamao. I suggest wearing long pants—it's not the usual stone path and might scratch your legs. Along the way, several kids of similar age formed an impromptu group. My child, who usually doesn't like walking, insisted on leading with Zhamao. The kids were united and friendly, picking mushrooms and giving them to each other. Jason and Yanzi were very caring with the kids, knowledgeable, and could talk about the plants along the road with ease. When we reached the top, we drank the cold tea and blueberry mung bean cakes Yanzi brought—refreshing and delightful. Before leaving, we were still eager and quickly arranged to pick mushrooms the next day. That was after being exhausted at 8 p.m. and having to get up at 6 a.m., but my child excitedly woke up on his own. The next day, though very tired and with heavy rain threatening, we still went. This time it was Xiaojing and Yanzi. The mushrooms were much harder to find than expected, but luckily a lady had picked a basket in advance, so we had delicious king boletes and mushroom chicken soup for lunch. A month later, I accidentally saw the lady, Xiaojing, and Haha in a travel show by the Poor Brothers. My thoughts drifted back to that beautiful Dali and the simple, loving people. The service was very thorough. Our group had 36 people with 3 guides who divided the work well and organized everything nicely. We also picked mushrooms—though not as big as we imagined, it was still a fruitful harvest with various types. Both adults and children had the joy of treasure hunting. We had luggage because we were catching a flight in the afternoon, and the guide specially drove to help us transport our bags—very considerate. The most commendable was the farmhouse lunch, which suited our tastes perfectly. The homemade fermented bean curd and steamed pork with rice flour were really delicious.

I signed up for 3 activities at Cangshan Hiking Home: mushroom picking, light hiking, and paddleboarding. I loved them all. Mushroom picking was led by gentle Xiao Jing, accompanied by cute Haha. Paddleboarding was our family's first time—very stable and easy to master. My favorite was the light hike led by Jason. That day, only our family participated, and my child had Zha Mao all to themselves. The scenery along the way was beautiful, without crowds of tourists. After returning home, my child immediately drew a picture for Zha Mao and still talks about Zha Mao fondly. August | Morning mountain mushroom foraging A few days into August, it still feels like early summer here, cool and mild. I've been staying near Cangshan recently. To go into the mountains to forage for mushrooms, you have to go with locals to feel safe. The morning after rain is clean and crisp, with humidity that makes every breath more moist than on a sunny day. Once we entered the mountains, I felt a spiritual energy surrounding us, and the sound of a stream flowing down from above. We followed the guide, Yanzi, upward. What caught my eye shifted from colorful wildflowers to deep greens of varying shades, dense moss, and lush vegetation. Then I saw the flowing water I'd heard earlier. Time to focus on mushroom foraging. This experience was so fun! You need to calm down, bury your head, and turn over thick layers of pine needles. The mushrooms hide among all kinds of hidden grass and soil. Ah, here, found one! That sense of accomplishment makes you want to find more. With the guide's tips and growing experience, we found many sneaky blue-staining boletes. Going further up, we could see a stretch of villages and water—that was Erhai Lake. The guide laid out a picnic cloth, brought out fruit, snacks, and tea. She said the wild tea was picked and stir-fried by herself, and it was very refreshing. Sitting quietly, taking it all in. It felt like saying goodbye to myself, entering a new parallel world...

Finally fulfilled my wish to go up the mountain and pick mushrooms. Even though I scratched around like a dog and didn't find many big mushrooms, my teammates around me all had a great harvest! The guide thoughtfully prepared a tea break. Halfway up the hill, overlooking the scenery by Erhai Lake, sipping hot tea and eating some snacks—so comfortable! It was during this break that a kid in our group picked a bolete as big as his face, or maybe it was a blue-staining bolete... I forgot... Borrowed the kid's mushroom for photos. After coming down the mountain, we gathered more mushrooms and then went to the guide's sister's house to eat them. All the mushrooms were sorted and then cooked into a delicious mushroom meal by the sister! Picture 5 shows the mushrooms picked by the sister who went up earlier, which were also part of our lunch. I want to try it again next time... Picking mushrooms is really addictive, even though my legs were sore in the afternoon...

Our group of seven friends was super lucky because it rained the night before. I never expected to pick so many mushrooms!! Xiaojing guided us the whole time, patiently explaining each type of mushroom. I had no idea there were so many kinds! Everyone picked a lot, but in the end, only a small basket was edible—not even enough for one dish. Fortunately, the farmhouse owner's sister had gone up the mountain early and picked a big basket of edible mushrooms. Thanks to her, we had plenty of mushrooms for lunch. The lunch was delicious!!! Next time I come to Dali, I'll sign up for mushroom picking again! P.S. The huge mushroom in my hand was not recommended for eating. I couldn't bear to throw it away and kept it, thinking it would dry out. I put it in a bag with the opening wide, but after three days, it had all turned into water... and there were hundreds of tiny white worms wriggling in the bag. It was horrifying. I'll never keep them again.

It was amazing! Although we didn't pick any mushrooms this year because Yunnan was particularly dry (not a single edible one, haha), it was still so much fun! The mountain trail was a bit challenging, making the hike exhilarating. The forest was very peaceful, with sunlight filtering through the trees, and looking back we could see Erhai Lake in the distance. Our guide, Sister Yanzi, knew almost every plant in the mountain. She carried blueberries, plums, and mung bean cakes for our tea break, and especially a big jug of cold-brewed plantain water—it was so refreshing and thirst-quenching! There was also a dog named Liangdian, who was amazing, full of energy and bustling around (not really). But be sure to protect yourself from the sun, or you'll end up with a painful neck like me.

Overall, it was a very satisfying hiking and mushroom-picking experience. The guides were very nice and helped us when we weren't good at picking. The mountain trail has many branches and steep slopes, so it's not suitable for very young children. Short kids would need to be carried by adults, which would be tiring for parents, but children who walk on their own will feel a great sense of accomplishment. It's a worthwhile experience for kids aged 6 and above.

My grandmother took the kids there. The whole trip wasn't too strenuous. The guide was very nice, helping the kids find mushrooms and being very patient. Lunch was also good. At the end, we took a few mushrooms as souvenirs, but I ended up cooking them... I forgot about the pot and they all turned into black mushrooms... The overall experience was great, fun and a good workout.

Zhenhao is an amazing photographer We drove ourselves and met at the designated spot at 8:00. Parking was very convenient. The weather was great. Although there weren't as many mushrooms as after the rainy season, we still picked a lot and had a lot of fun! The guide Zhenhao is super enthusiastic and straightforward, and her little green van is adorable too! I got so excited as soon as I started picking, and Zhenhao kept introducing the plants along the way and their medicinal uses. Perfect for plant lovers! Later, when I found out we had to head down the mountain by 10:30, I really wished time would slow down so I could keep picking mushrooms forever! Tips: Most importantly, Zhenhao is an amazing photographer and very humble too! Please enjoy the photos!

Xiaojing, I really like her! Just before the end of mushroom season, I quickly signed up for a group to go up the mountain and have fun! Before going up, I had some concerns, worried about being caught and taken to Myanmar to have my organs harvested. But now I can confirm to everyone that the group is safe! The whole trip was very interesting and a unique experience. Our guide, Xiaojing, I really like her! She's simple and enthusiastic. I hope she can always keep her passion for this job. I originally wanted to join other trips, but this time my visit to Dali was a bit rushed. Next time!

Xiao Jing is especially good at finding mushrooms This was my favorite activity during my half-month stay in Dali. I almost backed out because of the rain, but now I'm glad I persisted. When we first sat down for a picnic on the mountain, it started pouring. The three of us and a dog just sat there facing Cangshan and Erhai, listening to the rain hitting our raincoats, eating on the ground. Thinking back, it was a bit crazy but very happy and comfortable. Then the rain stopped and we started climbing. Heaven blessed us—though there was some rain along the way, it was very light. The kid followed Xiao Jing and Zha Mao all the way up (btw, Xiao Jing is great at soothing kids, super grateful). Xiao Jing also explained how mushrooms grow, and kept finding wild raspberries for the kid to eat (conservatively, at least a big box full went into the stomach). And Xiao Jing is really good at finding mushrooms!! Amazing, she knows every type like the back of her hand. She also took many beautiful photos for us. Today, both the kid and I were really happy. Thank you, Xiao Jing, for joining us in this rainy adventure. We agreed to come again when the kid is older! Hope next time we can complete the whole route!

Super healing Today, Xiao Jing and Yanzi took us into the mountains to pick mushrooms. A group of mushroom elves were gradually discovered by us, cute and fun. The colors in the mountains were incredibly beautiful—green, brown, red, pink, yellow, absolutely wonderful. The air was fresh with the scent of various plants and soil. After picking mushrooms, the guides patiently taught us about different types of fungi. Throughout the trip, they thoughtfully explained various plants and helped everyone. They really worked hard. Thank you, Xiao Jing and Yanzi, for this super healing experience! The final mushroom feast was a treat for the taste buds! An unforgettable taste!

I prefer the hiking journey more Today we were lucky with a light drizzle; we didn't even need hats or raincoats, so we could play freely. An 8-year-old child completed the whole journey without any issues. We harvested plenty of mushrooms. But what I liked more was the hiking journey itself.

Harvest Convenient transportation, you can drive directly. Experienced mushroom picking on Cangshan Mountain, a great harvest. Learned about many types of mushrooms and plants. Sister Yanzi was especially lovely, her explanations were interesting, and the kids loved it. Recommendation reason: Yunnan's vegetation is very rich, unlike other regions, definitely worth experiencing. Tips: Eat a full meal before climbing, otherwise you might feel a bit dizzy due to the altitude.

Tough but beautiful Even though it was a rainy day and the journey was a bit tough, it was still too beautiful to capture in just twenty photos!

Will sign up again It rained on the day of departure, but guide Sister Yang Mi thoughtfully prepared raincoats for us. I thought it was past the season and there wouldn't be many mushrooms on the mountain, but we had a super big harvest—pine nuts, wild fruits, mushrooms... Five hours on the mountain trail accompanied by light rain and the scent of pine. During the break for lunch, the guide sister patiently introduced us to the types and characteristics of the mushrooms we picked. It was amazing to experience the wonders of nature. Love it here First of all, the leading teacher, Teacher Yanzi, is very nice. Everyone must look for Yanzi when they come to play. It was my first time experiencing the charm of Dali. At 9 a.m., under the teacher's guidance, we went up the mountain to pick mushrooms. I'm not good at walking on mountain paths, but Teacher Yanzi held my hand and helped me along. She also thoughtfully prepared tea and snacks for us. I really love mushrooms, and I harvested a full basket. I plan to take them back, dry them, and make specimens—a new kind of souvenir and experience! The air on the mountain was very fresh. I truly love it here!
