A Day in the Mountain Village of Xipo

Weishan Temple Street Market|Every 3rd and 8th of the month

Hike Through Fern Forest

On Cangshan Mountain during the rainy season, where rain comes and goes, you'll find ancient little temples that seem to belong in the game Black Myth: Wukong, Bai elderly people chanting, masts erected for the Torch Festival, mushrooms of all colors, and a sea of ferns cascading down like waterfalls. At the summit, the mist is thick, yet Erhai Lake and the villages below are clearly visible. Our guide, Teacher Wangwang, is like a botanist, explaining countless plant species along the way. Although I didn't remember all of them, seeing the ferns spill down like a waterfall was truly breathtaking. Although this was a hike in the nearby mountains, the trail was a bit wild for us city dwellers. We were exhausted going up and down, but fortunately, the guide cleared the way ahead. Highly recommended as a way to deeply connect with Dali's natural beauty.

Hiking through the primeval forest on Cangshan Mountain in the rain was a rare experience in this lifetime. Although most of the time we were trudging through muddy, pathless terrain under towering green vegetation, imagining that dinosaurs were having a buffet here hundreds of millions of years ago... but since there was no turning back, we had to keep going. Isn't most of life like that? Fortunately, we were ultimately rewarded with a "sudden clarity" moment. Thanks to our patient and meticulous guide, Huanhuan, this trip was both interesting and meaningful! Three six-year-old children and a grandmother in her sixties all reached the destination safely!

The tour guide was a particularly attentive and lovely young woman. She patiently explained the names and uses of the plants throughout the trip, and the tea snacks she prepared were also delicious! While we were making our travel journals, another girl traveling with us and I had placed our bags on the ground. When we went back to get our things, we saw that she had placed her own bag and jacket underneath ours to keep them off the ground 🥹

The trip to the Fengyu Ancient Town market exceeded my expectations! Today was still a VIP group, and guide Xiao Li took my daughter and me along the way. We were very happy. First of all, Xiao Li's driving skills truly lived up to their reputation. Without exaggeration, he drove that last-century minivan with the momentum of an off-road vehicle plus a sports car—steady and fast! Second, Fengyu Ancient Town is a very rustic place. The market was full of locals, and we encountered fewer than 20 tourists throughout the whole trip. The goods at the market were fresh and looked healthy (all had insect holes). For many things we had never seen before, Xiao Li would introduce them and invite us to taste them. We ate as we walked along. Third, after visiting the market, we took a short walk in the ancient village and had afternoon tea. It felt so comfortable—hot tea 🍵 plus cheese sticks, very satisfying! They were very thoughtful in preparation, and there were also freshly bought fruits and boiled peanuts from the market. The plums were very sweet. Most importantly: Xiao Li himself is a person with a light about him. He is not just a guide or narrator, but he travels with us with his 'passion'. I'm not particularly good with words, and I don't know if I expressed it clearly. He has been on this route many times, but I could still see his love for all kinds of things during this short trip—photographing, observing, sharing. It was really fun to hang out with Xiao Li! I hope we can do an activity together again next time! Because of family matters, I left Dali early, so I didn't participate in the fern and Cloud Mountain Ridge activities. I'll leave it as a thought for next time, and I'll come again!

Paddle Boarding | Beautiful Lake at the Foot of the Mountain

The team communication went smoothly. We stayed in Xizhou, and they picked us up right from Xizhou, which was very convenient. Today was a VIP tour, one guide for the two of us. Our guide, Paris, was quite interesting. He treated us to ice cream and bought fruit—a lot of it. The two of us couldn't finish it all. We were really happy today. We went paddleboarding in the rain, with misty clouds around the mountains. Thanks to Paris for leading and encouraging us, and also for taking us to a delicious dinner! The child got bitten by ants, and Paris explained things very clearly, which eased the child's anxiety. Dali's West Lake is very beautiful, nestled in the mountains. We enjoyed over two hours of tranquility there. I love the scent of the wilderness, and with a light drizzle, it was perfect for letting the mind wander and doing some idle daydreaming.

Yanzi is a very good guide. She seems like a girl who grew up in the mountains and knows a lot about everything there (plants, ferns, mosses, mushrooms...). A good guide lends me the eyes to discover beauty. We spent an afternoon learning about the shapes of many mushrooms and the dark corners where they grow; discovering crystal-clear small fruits; plants that catch insects by secreting mucus; leaves with wonderful spores... The path Yanzi took us on is one we as tourists would never have found. So we had a different adventurous experience. We even climbed up to a tea garden; at the end of a winding path where plants grew wildly, there was a wide open space perfect for a picnic. What surprised me was that Yanzi brought a lot of snacks, fruits, and milk tea for the picnic. Eating and chatting was relaxing and joyful. Today's companion also included Yanzi's dog, which knew the mountain paths, half leading the way for us and half running around playing. The dog wasn't very close to strangers, but after an afternoon together, it opened up to me as well. I had a great time, and I hope Yanzi earns lots of money. — Nani

Very happy to follow Phoebe and Xiangyang into the mountains and explore nature ✨ Along the way, we encountered many plants and small insects we had never seen before, full of fresh surprises. After reaching the summit, we had a pleasant picnic on the mountaintop, with the wind blowing very comfortably. The child exclaimed with surprise: 'This can't be a dream, right!' Many adults have long been unable to perceive such simple joys, but children can always immerse themselves wholeheartedly. It was really a great experience.

Today's experience was truly a first in my life! Taking an unconventional path into the mountains, our guide patiently explained every plant we encountered. In July, Cangshan Mountain had a gentle breeze, bringing a sense of coolness and relaxation along the hiking trail. We even spotted various adorable mushrooms! It was a truly magical experience, and I could feel the dedication of the whole team. The hand-bound notebook they prepared was custom-made from Dongba paper! Next time I come to Dali, I'll definitely try another route. Highly recommended!!

Paddle Boarding | Beautiful Lake at the Foot of the Mountain

The kid kept saying: Can we come again tomorrow? The day after? Next year? The adults kept asking: Are there any more activities led by Bali and Xiao Li? We want to join again! Our family is into sports, so we were really excited about the paddleboarding reservation. We arrived at Pushi 40 minutes early to wait. Before long, a tall guy with sporty sunglasses, dressed like a surfer, with shoulder-length hair got out of a car. I thought to myself, that must be Xiao Li. Sure enough, Xiao Li came with a huge thermos full of ice cubes, ready to make some refreshing drinks later. Not long after, Bali arrived, looking super cool—his rebellious vibe made me feel like following him was the right call. The activity was insane! The kids kept asking: Can we jump into the water now? How about here? Can we swim? Can we swim a long way? Can I play on the coach's board? The three kids kept jumping into the water, getting back on the board, jumping again, and swimming. Even the seven-year-old could handle the paddleboard skillfully, gliding across the lake with ease. Even if you can't swim, it's fine—paddleboards are way easier to balance on than surfboards. Over two hours on the lake: There was the chaotic fun of splashing, jumping, and swimming; There were quiet, relaxing moments lying on the board, resting, surrounded by beautiful mountains and lake. Some photos even caught rainbows 🌈 If there had been drinks and a bonfire after getting ashore, it would have been perfect. Highly recommended!! Bali, Xiao Li, and DD were so easygoing! Friendly and communicative. Whatever we wanted to do, as long as it was safe, they were happy to let us try! Btw, we insisted on Bali taking us to dinner—it was delicious and affordable!

A day of picking green plums to make wine. We drove for almost two hours, with the last stretch on a dirt road, deep into a Yi village in the mountains. The elderly couple picking plums worked so hard and even shared baba cakes and honey with us! Xiao Li shared some plum wine he made last year – it was delicious! After picking and washing plums, we worked until 2 pm and had claypot rice cooked over a wood fire on a stone stove. We also harvested honey – so sweet, and the little bees were so industrious. We put labels on the plum wine, ready to be opened next year. A truly meaningful day. Xiao Li and Shitou are both such warm-hearted guys.

The mushroom picking class that the little ones had been eagerly anticipating was a complete success. The leader, Teacher Xiaomi, was very patient with the children. On the way down the mountain, they held Teacher Xiaomi's hand the whole time and didn't need mom anymore, haha. Since our two kids are still young and couldn't take notes on their own, the teacher helped them paste and write down the names of the plants. It's a pity that there weren't many mushrooms to harvest this season, but the kids had a great time, and that's enough!

I was fortunate to meet Teacher Phoebe, who is full of vitality. She is deeply devoted to what she loves. The mountains and wild things are so vivid and interesting in her eyes. The children have walked far away, but lovely Teacher Phoebe is still looking for the walking stick's dinner, observing a little bug on a green leaf. Today, following such a Teacher Phoebe to observe insects and leaves, the little one gained not only knowledge of new insects and plants but also a glimpse through the teacher of the liveliness and fun of the mountains and wild things, the subtle and healing beauty of nature. The forest is the classroom, passion is the teacher. The education hidden in the small corners of plants and trees nourishes silently and softly. 💚

Not enough walks – never enough! If it weren't for being in the mountains, where the sun sets quickly and darkness falls fast, everyone would have wanted to continue exploring, digging deeper to discover new plants and fungi. Upon meeting, the kids were overly enthusiastic, playing with the stream, shouting, 'Stream, lead the way! Go ahead!' A little dog, then a five-year-old boy, then Yang Mi, who knows the mountains well, the whole group marched in high spirits under the sun-dappled leaves, searching for fern leaves with spores, and scanning the damp, bumpy cliff edges like radar for magical mushrooms. 'My eyes are a ruler!' Everyone strained their eyes wide, competing to be more meticulous, to have better vision, just to find something more unique and novel. The funniest part was that after descending the mountain and returning home, while we were having dinner at the restaurant, we held a knowledge quiz, testing each other on the new things learned on the mountain that day. Based on the difficulty of the questions, the prize money varied. Learning while playing – it was truly a super satisfying, super joyful day. Next time, I want to go on a fern hike, soaking deep in the mountains. 2026.07.21 T.T.

Wild Forest Trail for Mushroom Picking and Pinecone Collecting | Vegetarian Meal at Jizhao Nunnery after Hiking

Together with Zhenhao and Zhamao, we wandered through the varied vegetation of Cangshan. Mushrooms were hidden all along the forest paths—in every color and under every kind of cap—and Zhenhao taught us many of their scientific names. Moss clung to old trees, ferns curled around tender shoots, and where my fingertips brushed past, the pulse of Cangshan seemed to lie right in my palm. By the time we reached Jizhao Nunnery, the sun was just slanting across the upturned eaves. On the wooden table sat a bowl of vegetarian fare—tofu simmered until soft, pumpkin steamed until sweet as honey. In the time it took to eat that simple meal, we gathered all the green of the mountain into our stomachs. As we descended, the wind swept past our ears, and Zhamao ran happily at our feet. Some encounters need no names, and some flavors need no words. Cangshan has long since written its answers on every leaf.

Longshouguan Ruins, moderate-distance hike, 8 hours, 13km, elevation gain nearly 600m. With a fitness habit, I found it manageable overall. The guides were Hanhan and Dangeng. Highlights: 1. The guides shared knowledge about plants and animals along the way, picking various mushrooms randomly, and offering some non-toxic sweet-and-sour wild fruits. Knowledge flooded in—learned a lot! 2. The scenery was stunning. Morning mist drifted like Erhai Lake slowly unveiling its veil; afternoon sunlight sporadically fell on distant villages and mountains, guiding us into the forest. 3. Dangeng is a warm-hearted little dog, always running back and forth to make sure all three of us were safe. 4. The lunch break was abundant: purple sweet potato cakes, assorted fruits, sandwiches, instant noodles, milk strips, spicy strips, and very tasty black tea. 5. The guides took photos of food, scenery, and people. Although I had no need for photos, they shared nearly a hundred images in the group afterward. 6. My fellow hiker was very kind—she lent me sunscreen and helped when the trail got rough. Having someone behind me felt reassuring. 7. Safety was my top concern. Being my first time in Yunnan and first hike, I needed a guide for safety. Hanhan gave thorough and timely reminders. Grateful.
