Dali Bai People's Torch Festival (Lunar June 25th)

This entry was authored by Qiqi; thank her for writing such a thorough record, I'll directly quote it. The Torch Festival is one of the most solemn traditional festivals of the Bai people, held on the 25th day of the sixth lunar month every year. The Torch Festival originates from fire worship and was also called the 'New Fire Festival' in old times. In Dali's folk legends, the Torch Festival comes from the story of 'Burning the Songming Tower,' established to commemorate the loyal Lady Bojie. Women dyeing their fingernails with balsam flowers before the festival is also related to Lady Bojie. Besides the Torch Festival, the Shua Hai Festival (Water Splashing Festival) on the eighth day of the eighth lunar month, in Dengchuan and Xizhou areas, also connects its origin to Lady Bojie's drowning herself in the lake.

Zhenhao Mama's Pear Slices

My mom's second batch of pear slice tea is ready. Zhenhao Mama's pear slice tea😊, the color is not that white, because it's impossible to be that white if nothing is added. Normally add two slices to water, I'll put three slices when going up the mountain and let it steep in the pot, it'll be more fragrant after a while. 250g/pack, 89/pack, you can only say it's reassuring to drink, nothing added, only pears.

Shaxi

130 km from the old town. Everyone who goes there says they love it, exceeding expectations. It is a town on the Ancient Tea Horse Road, maintained by a Swiss foundation, so it retains its original character without disorder. Just a few steps outside the town is the Heihui River, along which you can take a walk, surrounded by fields, feeling relaxed and joyful. Find a place called Banshan Coffee (just as a landmark), walk there to overlook the town and valley. If you have more time, Shibao Mountain is also a good nearby attraction, with many cliff-side Buddha statues, and there are hiking trails. You can search for "Shadeng Jing Grotto Area". There is a hiking trail going up (an exploratory route, for ordinary people caution, pair with app: maps.me to see tracks). I have only been to three good local restaurants: Dazhong Restaurant (fish soup is very good), Lihua Restaurant (beef and local dishes), Longfeng Ruiying Restaurant, affordable and delicious. Cafes: Crow Coffee and Chicha Qu (desserts). You can rent a car to go (suggest taking the Niusha Route, which is less crowded and beautiful, turn at Niujie up the mountain, the road in the village before entering Niusha Route is not great, you may doubt you are on the wrong road). You can also take bus 214 at Cangshan Gate to Jianchuan, then transfer to a rural bus at Diannan Town. Additionally, every morning at 9 o'clock, there is a round-trip bus from Lanlinge Hotel on Yuer Road in the old town to Shaxi Lanlinge Hotel. Call this number in advance to confirm 18887265969 or there is a car that runs to Shaxi daily 17387207019 Xiao Yang, about 80 per person. Image

Yanzi and Evan's 'Shanfei Distillery' MB Distillery

A few days ago (March 12, 2025), I visited Yanzi and Evan's 'Shanfei Distillery' for the first time with Cheng Chang and Guo Ying. I had known about it before, and had also seen their distilled spirits at Pushi Bakery, but my understanding was limited. I don't know much about wine, and I don't drink alcohol. But Xiao Chun said it was great; he runs a professional whisky bar. There, I listened to the conversation between Yanzi and Cheng Chang, and felt her and Evan's love and enthusiasm. They also basically invest all their energy in production, and don't have much energy for marketing: when I asked where I could see their online store, Yanzi said: until now, they just use WeChat.

Jason | Using AI to Create Your Own Mini Program/Website

Two months ago in Chiang Mai, I stumbled upon the chance to start learning how to build mini programs. My AI programming mentor, Wangshen, told me, 'Once you finish your mini program, write a summary report.' Now I've completed the new mini program for Cangshan Hiking Home, and it's already being tested. It not only solves problems I've wanted to address for a while, like adding age tags to filter activities and providing an English version, but it has also introduced new features, such as browsing restaurants, guesthouses, and meeting points on a map for a more intuitive experience, and using AI to provide quite intelligent responses.

Celebrate the Torch Festival in a Nanzhao Royal Clan Village

Over the past two years, we have taken guests to celebrate the Torch Festival in Songhe Village, Eryuan. Together we slaughtered a sheep, and with the whole village, erected a huge torch in the center of the village square. Everyone made their own torches from hemp stalks, and together with the older and younger villagers, we rushed to grab the blessing baba (cakes) from the big torch, passing blessings to each other with fire. Even for me, a native Bai person, these are rare and precious traditional festival experiences. Dali has endless festivals, and I want to experience them more before they fade away. I remember the Torch Festival of my childhood: torches were no longer enough for me. Before the festival, I would tell my dad to prepare a bucket of waste engine oil and diesel, mix them together, and then I would tightly bind cotton and old cloth with rope into a ball (some kids would secretly take cotton from their quilts at home to make it). Finally, I would make an iron wire ball, soak it in the bucket of oil, and secretly take it out every day to look at it, looking forward to having a great time on the day of the Torch Festival. We would compete in the village and by the rice fields to see whose fireball or torch was more impressive. When the torches and fireballs were almost burned out, we would rush home, walk around the potted fruit trees in circles, and say blessing words, hoping they would grow even better in the coming year.
