A few days ago (March 12, 2025), I went to Yanzi and Evan's 'Shanfei Distillery' for the first time with Cheng Chang and Guo Ying. I had known about it before, and had also seen their distilled spirits at Pushi Bakery, but my understanding was limited. I don't know much about wine, and I don't drink alcohol. But Xiao Chun said it was great; he runs a professional whisky bar.
There, I listened to the conversation between Yanzi and Cheng Chang, and felt her and Evan's love and enthusiasm. They also basically invest all their energy in production, and don't have much energy for marketing: when I asked where I could see their online store, Yanzi said: until now, they just use WeChat.
After returning, I read the official account articles written by Yanzi, which took a lot of effort. They very candidly record their family's feelings about their practice of distilled spirits, about their own understanding, successes and setbacks. It's excellent, and you can see many sincere and valuable insights.
From Yanzi's records, Shanfei Distillery began trying in 2017, and established the factory in 2020. They have been continuously practicing and experimenting, with both successes and setbacks. They have gained a lot of recognition for their liqueurs and rum, and are satisfied with themselves, with a great sense of achievement. They are also exploring hard in the direction of whisky.
When doing something, you need to make something with your own characteristics, an exploration with your own thinking, rather than 'professional authority and arrogance'. No matter the field, across history and space, no one can be arrogant. If it is a sincere exploration with one's own understanding and progress, that is the most valuable. What others have done can serve as inspiration and reference.
